Amaretto Stone Sour
Made popular in the 1970’s, the amaretto stone sour features sweet Italian liqueur mixed with orange juice and sour mix. Garnished with a maraschino cherry and an orange wheel, this light cocktail riff makes for a delicious, well-rounded drink that’s perfect for brunch or a summer afternoon.
Why we love the amaretto stone sour
- This is my sister’s new favorite drink because it reminds her of the early 2000s band, Stone Sour. While I don’t remember the band myself, I’m definitely into this drink.
- I absolutely love the balance that the orange juice brings to this drink. I personally think traditional sour can be a bit harsh, especially when made with store bought sour mix (yet another reason to make your own).

Ingredients & substitutions
- Amaretto – This Italian liqueur is made from stone fruit kernels and almonds which gives it a nutty, slightly fruity flavor with a hint of bitter.
- Orange juice – This is what differentiates a stone sour from a more traditional amaretto sour, so don’t skip this. Fresh squeezed would be best, but any kind of orange juice will do.
- Sour mix – If you don’t have sour mix, you can use equal parts lemon/lime juices and simple syrup.
How to make an amaretto stone sour
Shake the cocktail. Combine the amaretto, orange juice, and sour mix in a cocktail shaker with ice. Cover and shake until cold.
Garnish and serve. Strain into a lowball glass filled with ice and garnish with a cherry and orange wheel.
I like to slide mine onto a cocktail pick, but just a single cherry thrown on top would do quite nicely.
Everything you need to know about the amaretto stone sour
Amaretto is made with what are considered to be “stone” fruit. The word stone was likely added to differentiate between the traditional amaretto sour.
