Why we love the duck fart shot

Even though it has a funny name, this shooter is no joke. The sweet layers of liqueur topped with whiskey make it delicious and fun to drink.

With layered shots, it’s all about this presentation. It’s fun to serve them layered like this, but if you don’t feel like layering, you can easily just mix up equal parts of each ingredient.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Kahlua – If you don’t have this, another coffee liqueur will work.
  • Bailey’s – Any Irish cream will work, but make sure to chill this. It really helps when layering this shot.
  • Whiskey – Any type of whiskey will work. Use your favorite whiskey.
Three layered shots in a line.

How to make a duck fart shot

Chill your ingredients. Since you aren’t going to shake them, you can chill your bottles before mixing these shots or you can stir your ingredients with ice in a mixing glass until cold.

Layer the shots. Start by pouring your coffee liqueur into the glass. Then, use a bar to slowly pour the Irish cream on top. Repeat this process to add the whiskey to the top of the glass.

Everything you need to know about the duck fart shot

Where did the Duck Fart originate?

The duck fart shot is said to have originated in Alaska. It has also been said this shot gained popularity through the TV show Deadliest Catch.

How do you pour layered shots?

You want to layer shots using the densest alcohol first. Pour the bottom layer, then using the back of a bar spoon you will slowly pour each layer on top of each other. Making sure not to touch the layer below, while hovering as close as possible and lifting as the glass fills will help keep the layers separate.

    Recipe Notes

    Layering tips:
    • We used chilled Baileys, which resulted in much easier layering. Our Kahlua and whiskey were both at room temperature.
    • Lift the bar spoon as you are pouring your layers so the spoon never touches the layer below.
    • If the Baileys layer looks a bit cloudy, allow for a minute for the Baileys to settle before pouring whiskey.
