Why we love the garibaldi cocktail

  • Vibrantly colored and named for Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian military leader – this Italian aperitif pays homage to Italy’s rich history.
  • This cocktail keeps it simple with just two main ingredients — Campari and fresh orange juice. It’s a perfect cocktail for a lazy afternoon.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Campari – This bitter aperitif is the main flavor component of this cocktail.
  • Orange juice – Fresh squeezed always makes the best cocktails, but any orange juice will do.
  • Sea salt – Just a pinch to help balance the flavors.

How to make a garibaldi drink

Fill a highball glass with ice. Add campari and set aside to let the it chill a bit while you shake the remaining ingredients.

Fill a cocktail shaker without ice, adding orange juice and sea salt. Dry shake until frothy – you could alternatively use a milk frother to achieve a nice froth.

Strain the shaker. Pour contents of the shaker over the Campari and ice in the highball glass. Remove the strainer and allow the residual froth to top off the cocktail before garnishing with an orange wedge.

Everything you need to know about campari cocktails

What does a Garibaldi taste like?

Basically, a Garibaldi cocktail mixes up bitterness and sweetness with a good ol’ citrus punch. If you like an aperitif style cocktail or a not-too-boozy cocktail this one’s for you.

What type of liquor is Campari?

Campari is a type of liqueur, but it’s not your usual drink. It’s considered to be a “bitter aperitif.” It’s made with a mix of herbs and fruit which gives it that bright red color and a strong bitter taste. It’s added to cocktails to balance them with it’s prominent bitterness and it’s not super strong, usually around 20-24% alcohol.

Is Aperol a substitute for Campari?

Aperol will work as a substitute for Campari in most cocktails, though the taste will change slightly. Aperol is less bitter and more citrus forward than Campari, but for the most part the flavors are similar.

More fresh juice cocktails you will love

  • Orange crush cocktail
  • Malibu bay breeze
  • Cucumber margarita
  • Cantaritos

More aperitif cocktails you should try

  • Aperol sour
  • Bicicletta cocktail
  • Naked and famous cocktail
  • Negroni sbagliato
