Why we love the Harvey Wallbanger
- If you like a classic screwdriver, you need to try this old-school variation. It’s like vintage sunshine in a glass – refreshing and a little unexpected. If you like a refreshing and unexpected cocktail with vintage charm, try mixing up a golden dream cocktail – you will like it just as much!
- This cocktail is a breeze to make. Even with the little Galliano float on the top, you don’t have to worry about layering – the color blends beautifully into the orange juice.

Here’s what you’ll need to make it

Ingredients & substitutions
- Galliano – This is an Italian liqueur that is flavored with a blend of herbs, spices, and vanilla. It is sweet and aromatic, adding an herbal element to the cocktail.
- Orange juice – Usually I say fresh squeezed is best, but with orange juice, I think there is a little wiggle room. I’d recommend a high quality bottled juice.
- Vodka – Use whatever vodka you have on hand. I don’t get picky about vodka since it doesn’t usually have a strong flavor profile. I think we used Tito’s to make this one.

How to make a Harvey Wallbanger cocktail
Mix your cocktail. Fill a highball glass with ice and add your vodka and OJ to the glass. Stir with a bar spoon until the drink is chilled – about 15/20 seconds. Then, use the bar spoon to layer Galliano on top of the drink.
Garnish and serve. Before serving, top with an orange slice. You could also garnish with an orange twist or wheel. Feel free to add a cocktail cherry – I just didn’t have any on hand when we made this drink.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a Harvey Wallbanger and a screwdriver?
Both cocktails are made with vodka and orange juice, but the Harvey Wallbanger includes a splash of Galliano, an Italian liqueur. This addition gives the Harvey Wallbanger a more complex flavor with herbal and vanilla notes, distinguishing it from the traditional Screwdriver.
What kind of alcohol is Galliano?
Galliano is an herbal liqueur made in Italy. It is vibrant yellow in color and features anise and vanilla notes. It is considered a digestif, and often served after dinner or in cocktails. While it has similar flavors to other anise liqueurs such as sambuca or pastis, its anise flavor is less pronounced and rounded out slightly by the hint of vanilla.
