Hemingway Daiquiri

Named after the iconic American author, the Hemingway Daiquiri is a sophisticated blend of white rum, lime and grapefruit juice, with a touch of maraschino liqueur. This classic cocktail is also known as the Hemingway special or the Papa Doble, but regardless of it’s name, this drink is the perfect balance of tart and sweet.

Why we love the Hemingway daiquiri

Something about the delicate blend of ingredients gives it a nostalgic vibe with a hint of mystery. It just screams, I’m cool but take me seriously in a tortured writer kind of way. It’s like the classic cocktail version of the french blonde cocktail.

If you like this recipe, you have to try the Mary Pickford cocktail, and this Hotel Nacional cocktail and this dark rum mojito.

Searching for more tropical rum cocktails? You should try this yellow bird cocktail or this planter’s punch recipe. Oh, and don’t miss out on this sweet, frozen passion fruit daiquiri.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Rum – A white rum works best for this cocktail because of its clean, light flavor.
  • Maraschino liqueur – This adds subtle notes of cherry and almond sweetness.
  • Grapefruit juice – Normally I recommend fresh squeezed citrus, but grapefruit is one of my few exceptions to that rule. I find that bottled (as long as it’s not from concentrate) works just fine.
  • Lime juice

The following is a detailed overview of the recipe steps with added tips and tricks for recipe success. For a simplified and printable version, including ingredient amounts and more formal instructions, see the recipe card below.

How to make this Hemingway daiquiri

Make your cocktail. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice. Cover and shake vigorously until the cocktail is well chilled – about 30 seconds.

Garnish and serve. Strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with a lime wheel before serving. You could also garnish this with a lime twist, grapefruit slice or even a cocktail cherry, but lime is the most traditional choice.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a Hemingway daiquiri and a daiquiri? Both cocktails begin with a base of white rum and lime juice, but the Hemingway daiquiri adds grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur, creating a more distinct flavor compared to the straightforward flavor of the classic daiquiri.
