Why we love the Irish maid cocktail

There’s a lot of tradition when it comes to holidays, and St. Patrick’s Day is definitely no different. It’s whiskey centric, and that’s not necessarily everyone’s favorite. That’s why I love this take on an Irish whiskey cocktail.

This contemporary and elegant cocktail is a little unexpected, but it’s still a great way to celebrate Irish culture and heritage. If you aren’t a huge whiskey drinker, this one is definitely worth trying.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Irish whiskey – A classic Irish whiskey is what you need for this recipe. I’ve used Jameson, because I had it on hand, but use what you have. No need for anything super fancy or expensive.
  • St. Germain – This elderflower liqueur gives this drink it’s signature taste. You can’t really skip it, but you can substitute it with another brand of elderflower liqueur.
  • Lemon juice – Fresh squeezed is best
  • Simple syrup – Store bought or you can make this yourself with equal parts water and sugar.
  • Cucumbers
  • Fresh mint – This is just for garnish, and you can totally skip it if you don’t have any on hand. It just adds a nice aroma and pop of color to the drink.

How to make an Irish maid cocktail

Mix your drink. Add the cucumber to your cocktail shaker and gently mash it up with a muddler. Then, add ice and the cocktail ingredients. Cover and shake until the drink is cold.

Garnish and serve. Strain the cocktail into an old-fashioned or lowball glass filled with ice, and garnish with a few slices of cucumber and a sprig of fresh mint.
