Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas
Inspired by the 90s cult classic, Practical Magic, these midnight margaritas are made with an enchanting blend of rosemary, lavender and a pinch of salt. They’re perfect for a cozy Halloween at home watching your favorite spooky film.
Why I love these Practical Magic midnight margaritas
It had been years since I watched Practical Magic, so when it popped up on Hulu, I knew I had to watch it immediately. Not only was I a huge fan of the film when I was younger, I was also obsessed with the soundtrack. It somehow turned into one of my favorite study soundtracks and I was still listening to it regularly into my 20s.
As the credits are about to roll, Sally says “There’re some things I know for certain. Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder. Keep rosemary by your garden gate. Plant lavender for luck. And fall in love whenever you can.”
That’s where the idea for this incredible margarita came to from, and it’s truly magical.
Here’s what you’ll need to make it

Equipment
Ingredients & substitutions
- Tequila – Since you won’t be able to find a bottle of Diablo de Flores at your liquor store, I recommend using your favorite blanco tequila. We used Dos Primos.
- Rosemary – Only use fresh rosemary for this. It just tastes better.
- Lavender – Dried lavender flowers can usually be found in the spice aisle at your grocery store, but you can also get them online.
- Orange liqueur – I used Cointreau, but you can use triple sec, Grand Marnier or even dry curaçao.
- Lime juice – Fresh squeezed is always best!
- Sea salt – You want to use a flaky salt for this because it will dissolve the best in your drink. I used Maldon sea salt.
How to make midnight margaritas
Make the simple syrup. Heat 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar in a saucepan over medium high, and stir until dissolved. Then, stir in 1 tablespoon lavender flowers and two sprigs of fresh rosemary. Reduce heat and allow the syrup to steep for about 10 minutes.
Remove the pan from heat and allow it to cool. Then, strain into a container and stir in 2 drops of purple food coloring (optional).
Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. YOu can make this ahead of time and store it for up to 1 week.
Shake your cocktail. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the cocktail ingredients. Cover and shake vigorously until cold – about 30 seconds.
Garnish and serve. Strain your margarita into a cocktail glass filled with ice and garnish with a lime wedge, fresh rosemary sprig and a sprinkle of lavender flowers.
Everything you need to know about midnight margaritas
Midnight Margaritas come from a beloved scene in the 1998 film “Practical Magic.” In this iconic scene, two sisters with their aunts enjoy a whimsical, midnight ritual of making and drinking Midnight Margaritas, casting spells, and dancing around their kitchen.
It is rumored that if you start the movie Practical magic at 11:12pm you will get to the iconic midnight margaritas scene exactly at midnight.
The choice between using triple sec or Cointreau in your margarita really just depends on your preference. Cointreau is a great choice if you want a margarita with a smooth margarita – it will be less sweet and have more vividly orange notes. A basic triple sec can work well in a margarita if don’t mind a slightly sweeter taste.
We have added a pinch of salt to this margarita, it balances out all the sweet flavors very well. Plus, you can always throw a little over your shoulder if you spill it.
