Orgeat Syrup

Orgeat is a sweet and nutty syrup that’s made from almonds, sugar, and rose and orange blossom water. This creamy syrup has a really unique taste to it, but can be tedious to make at home. My recipe for orgeat syrup uses an easy-to-make hack that will get you there in no time.

Why we love this orgeat syrup

If you’ve ever had a mai tai, you’ve had orgeat. This classic cocktail syrup is used in tons of tiki cocktails, but it’s uses aren’t limited to that genre. Try using it in a Hotel Georgia cocktail.

I’ve been buying orgeat at the grocery store for a long time, but it comes in really small bottle that aren’t very cheap. By making it at home, you’ll save money and get a better quality syrup.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Almond milk – I use the unsweetened plain almond milk we normally have at home, but you you can make your own if you prefer it.
  • Granulated sugar
  • Rose water
  • Orange blossom water
  • Almond extract – This isn’t really necessary in the recipe but I this that it highlights the flavor of the almonds a bit.
  • Vodka – This is to help keep the syrup fresher for longer, but it’s totally optional and you can use other basic spirits in its place.

How to make orgeat syrup

Make the syrup base. Heat almond milk and sugar in a large saucepan over medium high heat. When sugar has dissolved, remove from heat.

Add remaining ingredients. Whisk in the remaining ingredients and allow the syrup to cool.

Bottle the syrup. When the orgeat syrup has cooled, transfer to a mason jar or other airtight container. It can be stored for up to 1 month in the fridge.

Everything you need to know orgeat syrup

Do you need to refrigerate orgeat?

Yes, refrigerating your homemade orgeat syrup keeps it fresh and prevents harmful bacteria from growing. It also helps it keep the sweet almond flavor longer.

Does orgeat go bad?

Homemade orgeat syrup will stay fresh in an airtight container for up to a month. As time goes by it will lose its flavor and freshness.

What is orgeat used for?

Orgeat is used most commonly for tiki cocktails.
