Why we love the penicillin cocktail
I’ve been fighting off a cold for the last few days, and it got me thinking about how much a drink – warm or cold, spiked or not – can really make you feel better. There are some drinks that just get your through those days.
For me, I love a hot tea or a strong cocktail. This one packs a punch. Think Starbucks medicine ball, but with booze.
The honey ginger syrup is full of flavor – a little spicy and a little sweet – but it balances so well with the smoky scotch.

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Blended scotch whiskey – This is the base of your cocktail.
- Honey ginger simple syrup – Honey ginger syrup gives this cocktail it’s signature flavor. It’s super easy to make.
- Lemon juice – This drink is really simple, so you want to use fresh squeezed lemon juice for the best flavor.
- Single malt scotch whiskey – This adds an element of complexity to the cocktail. A little bit goes a long way, and if you have it, I recommend using something a little higher end and a little smoky.

How to make this penicillin cocktail recipe
Mix the cocktail. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the ingredients. Cover and shake until cold. This should take about 20 seconds or so.
Garnish and serve. Strain into a cocktail glass filled with large ice and garnish with a lemon peel. Express the peel over the cocktail first, but then after that you can make it pretty. I spun mine into a little rose and put it on a cocktail pick.
