Tequila Espresso Martini
Mixed with silver tequila, coffee liqueur and freshly brewed espresso, this tequila espresso martini is shaken until cold and garnished with espresso beans. This unique twist on the classic espresso martini is a surprising treat, and it’s a great way to serve tequila with a little caffeine.
Why we love this tequila martini
- I love a good espresso martini, with or without Bailey’s – they’re all great. But, I have to admit, when I first saw one made with tequila, I was a little skeptical. Thankfully, I was blown away.
- The flavors mesh really well together, and it’s a fun way to incorporate tequila into a cocktail in an unexpected way.
- The ingredients are simple, but the fresh brewed espresso creates a crema that gives the drink a beautiful smooth texture that is unbeatable. Plus, it provides a fluffy little bed for the espresso bean garnish.

Equipment
Ingredients & substitutions
- Tequila – I like to use silver tequila in my recipes. It’s usually what we have in our liquor cabinet, but you can also use gold.
- Coffee liqueur – You can use any coffee liqueur you want. We currently have a bottle of Grind, and I’m really liking it (I also used it for the dirty banana cocktail).
- Simple syrup – Store bought or homemade simple syrup will work, but if you have a flavored simple syrup that also might work, depending on the flavor you have. Choose something that you would pair with coffee, such as cinnamon or vanilla would work best.
- Brewed espresso – We use our Nespresso machine to brew a single shot of espresso, but you can also use a French press or other method of making espresso. You can also use decaf if you want.
How to make a espresso martini with tequila
Brew the espresso. Make sure you’re brewing your espresso a little bit in advance because you want to do make sure it has time to cool. 10 – 15 minutes should be long enough.
Chill some glasses. While the espresso is cooling, chill your martini glass. You can pop it into the freezer for about 10 minutes, or you can fill it with ice while you’re making your cocktail.
Shake the martini. Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Cover and shake until cold. Usually that takes about 30 seconds or so.
Garnish and serve. Strain the martini into a chilled martini or coupe glass. Let it sit for a minute and allow the crema to float to the top. Then, garnish with espresso beans.
Everything you need to know espresso martinis
Absolutely, tequila gives this espresso cocktail a very distinct, strong espresso flavor.
Yes, in order to achieve a strong espresso flavor this cocktail features espresso and espresso flavored rum. Keep in mind, this martini does have caffeine.
Some of the froth comes from the espresso itself and some comes from shaking the cocktail. Make sure you give this cocktail a good, hard shake when pouring into your glass, this helps the foam fall from the shaker onto the martini.
