What I love about Halloween margarita

Every Halloween I get super excited about making cocktails for various festivities, like pumpkin carving night and our annual post-trick-or-treat spooky movie watching tradition (it’s the only night of the year I’ll even consider a scary movie).

These have a great spooky vibe, especially when served in a pumpkin shaped glass. I got these in the dollar section at Target, but I also found these glasses that are super similar.

No matter how you serve them, the smoky mezcal and earthy sage make the cocktail better than your average margarita.

Plus, if you love a spooky themed cocktail, you will have to check out this haunted swamp water cocktail and all it’s creepy vibes.

How to make a blackberry margarita smash

Rim the glasses. Swipe the glass with a lime wedge or coat the rim in some agave nectar. Dip the glass in raw or turbinado sugar to coat. Cinnamon sugar would also work really well here. Then, fill the glass about 3/4 full with ice.

Smash the blackberries. Muddle the blackberries and sage with agave nectar and lime juice until the blackberries are smashed and the liquid has changed colors.

Shake the cocktail. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice and add the rest of your margarita ingredients. Cover and shake until the drink is nice and cold.

Strain and serve. Grab your prepared glass and strain the margarita into it. Before serving, garnish with a sprig of fresh sage and some extra blackberries if you have them.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smash cocktail?

A smash cocktail is any drink that contains smashed fruit, sugar or simple syrup and alcohol, served with ice.

Can I use tequila instead of Mezcal?

Yes, you may lose a bit of the smokey flavor that Mezcal is known for but you will still end up with a great cocktail.

Do I have to use sage in this recipe?

No. If you don’t have sage, another herb will work in its place. I would recommend something like rosemary or thyme, but mint or basil would also work.

The flavor balance on this cocktail is perfect. The hint of sage added a nice complexty to the drink. I received so many compliments at our party. I felt like a real mixologist! Thank you for sharing.

So this is super pretty and festive. I followed the recipe to a T the first time but the Mezcal was overwhelming all the other flavors. Second attempt I reduced the mezcal and used 1.5 oz 1800 silver, then a 1/2 oz mezcal. It was perfection! I tasted all the beautiful fruits and the smokey mezcal. Also love the glasses in the picture I would love to know where they are from.

They are from Target, but I’m pretty sure they were a season item that they no longer carry. I have seen similar ones at Williams Sonoma though! I also found these glass mugs.

This drink looks beautiful, I can’t wait to try it. I have never used mezcal. I looked it up and there’s so many so I’m lost at which one to use. Thank you in advance for any help.

For this margarita I used Casamigos brand, otherwise I also like Dos Hombres. I’ve heard Del Maguey mezcal is great and I’m planning on trying that next!

Same. I am making a witches brew cocktial in a pitcher for a halloween party tonight and this one looks delicious. Do you just X the measurements per person? I’m going to try it and I’ll report back.

Yes, the recipe is for 1 cocktail, so depending on how many you want to make you can just multiply the ingredients.

Did you by chance end up batching this? I would also love to make it for thanksgiving. I was thinking I could blend the blackberries instead of muddling so it can be easier to make for 10-ish people.

I will add this into the blog post later but here you go:

      Batch pitcher for 10 cocktails:
1 pint fresh blackberries (about 16–20 berries)
      10–12 fresh sage leaves, torn
      5 ounces agave nectar
5 ounces lime juice (about 5–6 limes)
      5 ounces pomegranate juice
      10 ounces mezcal

Mix the cocktail base: In a food processor, combine the blackberries, sage leaves, agave nectar, lime juice, and pomegranate juice. Blend until smooth. Strain the mixture into a large pitcher.
Add mezcal and chill: Stir the strained mixture with the mezcal in the pitcher. Add ice to the pitcher to chill or refrigerate until ready to serve.
