Why we love this mezcal negroni

  • As the weather cools, I find myself opting for mezcal over gin when it comes to negronis. There’s something about the smoky flavors of the mezcal that just seems so cozy to me, and it’s exactly what we need on dreary fall days.
  • Since not everyone loves gin – even though I don’t understand them – the mezcal negroni is a great way to enjoy the flavor of Campari in a less-herbaceous cocktail.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Mezcal – Use whatever you have on hand, but lately, I’ve been loving Dos Hombres mezcal. If you have one that you prefer, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
  • Campari – There’s no substitute for this one – at least not in a negroni – but if you want to play around, I have enjoyed other amaro in it’s place.
  • Sweet vermouth – You need the sweetness of the vermouth to balance the bitter flavor of the Campari and the strength of the mezcal. We like to buy Dolin Rouge.

How to make a mezcal negroni

Stir your cocktail. Fill a cocktail glass with ice. Add the mezcal, Campari and vermouth. Use a bar spoon and stir until cold.

Garnish and serve. Add a little more ice if needed and garnish with an orange twist. Serve immediately.

Everything you need to know recipe name

What does a mezcal negroni taste like?

A mezcal negroni tastes very similar to a classic negroni, but the herbal notes of gin are replaced with smoky flavors from the mezcal.

Is mezcal a tequila?

Well actually, tequila is a mezcal. Mezcal is a spirit made from agave nectar, while tequila is more specifically made from blue agave nectar and it’s produced in a specific region in Mexico.

Is mezcal sweeter than tequila?

The opposite is true, tequila is sweeter than mezcal, but each brand of mezcal and tequila will be slightly different, so it’s important to try a few to find one that you really like.

Mezcal Negroni

By: Melissa Belanger
The mezcal negroni is a simple, smoky twist on the classic bitter cocktail. The earthy and robust flavor of the mezcal pairs well with the citrus notes in Campari and the subtle sweetness of vermouth. It’s the perfect way from mezcal lovers to celebrate negroni week.
