Why I love gin mojitos

Even though I’ve always been a fan of mojitos, I’m still learning to like rum. Since we don’t always have rum in our liquor cabinet, I often opt for an alternative when I’m in the mood for a mojito, or when my mint plant is running wild.

Gin is my favorite choice because I love the way the herbaceous gin pairs with the lime and mint. Plus, it’s a great change of pace from my usual negroni or gin basil smash.

If you’re a fan of gin, I promise you’ll love a gin mojito.

How to make gin mojitos

Muddle the mint. In a large glass or cocktail shaker, combine the mint, lime juice and simple syrup. Smash with a muddler until the mint is crushed.

Shake the cocktail. Add ice and rum, and shake until cold. This should take about 15 – 20 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass filled with ice.

Garnish and serve. Top with club soda and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a lime wedge before serving.

FAQs and tips for making gin mojitos

What is the best alcohol for mojitos?

While it is traditionally made with silver rums, if you want to try different version you could use gin or vodka. I would keep with a clear liquor, but a dark rum would work, too.

What ingredients are in a mojito?

A traditional mojito consists of a simple syrup muddled with lime juice and fresh mint leaves, mixed with rum and topped with club soda. For this recipe we will use gin instead of rum!

Can you make a mojito without mint?

You could substitute basil, cilantro, or rosemary, just about any fresh herb that can be muddled. However, keep in mind that mint is a prominent flavor in a mojito, so your result will be much different when using different herbs.
