Why we love this tamarind margarita

  • This margarita is easy to make, but it makes an elegant alternative to the classic margarita.
  • Tamarind purée adds a sweet and tangy fruitiness that is the perfect balance to the tart, zesty flavors of this margarita recipe.
  • Instead of traditional agave nectar, I’ve replaced it with ginger simple syrup to add a hint of spice and warmth.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Tamarind purée – Tamarind purée is made from the pulp of the tamarind fruit. This thick sticky paste is deep brown in color and contributes a sweet yet tangy flavor, similar to a citrus fruit.
  • Tequila
  • Triple sec
  • Lime juice
  • Ginger simple syrup
  • Tajin – optional, for rimming glasses. You can skip this but the extra kick of salty-spicy is delicious with this margarita. Mix it with sugar for a sweet-spicy rim.

How to make a tamarind margarita

Prep your glasses. If you have time, chill your glasses. This recipe serves 4, so if you want that make glasses make sure you have them ready.

Before serving, rim your glasses with Tajin or salt, depending on what you prefer. I like a mix of the two.

Shake your cocktail. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the margarita ingredients. Cover and shake until nice and cold. Don’t be scared here, shake it well.

Garnish and serve. Strain your drinks into the prepared glasses and garnish with dried orange wheels (if you have them, otherwise a lime wedge or slice will work just fine). Serve immediately.

What alcohol does tamarind pair with?

Tamarind pairs very well with the citrus flavors of a margarita. This unique purèe is often used in curries, soups and stews for a deeper, more complex flavor in dishes.

What does tamarind paste taste like?

This fruit purèe is made from the pulp of the tamarind fruit. When pureed it is transformed into a sticky paste that is deep brown in color and contributes a sweet yet tangy flavor, similar to a citrus fruit.
