Why we love this dark rum mojito

  • I’ve never been a huge fan of white rum, so this dark rum mojito is just the thing for me. It’s a little more complex that the classic version, but still equally refreshing and crisp.
  • Since we’re using dark rum, I opted for a demerara sugar which enhances the caramel flavor of the dark rum and adds a beautiful texture to the drink.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Dark rum – Use your favorite dark rum (not spiced) for this recipe. I haven’t found a favorite bottle yet, so I used this aged Bacardi because it’s what we had in our liquor cabinet at the time.
  • Demerara sugar – If you don’t have this, feel free to use regular granulated sugar instead.
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Lime juice – Fresh is best. You’ll need a lime wedge for muddling to get that nice zesty flavor into your drink, but bottled could work in a pinch.
  • Club soda – This adds the fizz to your drink. I like to use basic club soda, but a flavored sparkling water like La Croix could work if that’s all you have. Just make sure the flavor makes sense with your cocktail.

How to make a dark rum mojito

Muddle the mint. In the bottom of your glass (or the base of a cocktail shaker), muddle the mint leaves with the lime and sugar. This should take about 10 – 15 seconds. You don’t want to be too hard on your mint – just give it enough to create a nice fragrance.

Mix in the rum. Add the rum to your glass and transfer to your cocktail glass if you’re muddling in a shaker.

Top with club soda. Fill you glass mostly with ice and add club soda to fill the cocktail. If needed, give it a gentle stir.

Garnish and serve. Add a fresh lime wedge a sprig of mint for garnish and serve immediately.

If you don’t have a ton of mint, feel free to skip that part and use the rest for another cocktail.

Everything you need to know a mojito

Which rum is best for mojito?

Mojitos can be great with a variety of different rums. Traditionally, a light rum is used in a mojito. We used a dark rum, specifically, Bacardí Reserva Ocho for this recipe. The dark rum lends a deeper and more complex taste than a light rum.

Why don’t you shake Mojitos?

Muddling the mint leaves is a key component to a fabulous mojito. When you muddle the mint leaves with lime juice and coarse sugar, you allow the mint oils to seep into the lime juice and mix with the sugar as it dissolves.
