Why we love this pina colada smoothie

  • When I make a breakfast smoothie, I wanted it to be healthy and filling. There’s really no need for excessive amounts of sugar in the morning, so I love that there’s no added sugar in this smoothie Just a little bit of pineapple juice for sweetness and that’s it.
  • I used ingredients we already had in the fridge – pineapple juice, coconut milk and my favorite coconut yogurt – and I tossed in some frozen pineapple, some oats, and a banana.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • You can really be flexible with your ingredients for this smoothie, but there are a few that you need to make this actually take like a pina colada: pineapple and coconut.
  • Feel free to swap you favorite dairy free milk and change out the yogurt flavor. I like to use unsweetened everything, but it’s your smoothie, so do what you prefer.
  • I like to buy my pineapple juice in small cans like these because I never really use that much in any given recipe, but if you only have orange juice, that’s ok, too.

How to make a piña colada smoothie

Combine ingredients. I like to put my liquid ingredients into the blender first, followed by the more solid ingredients like the frozen pineapple and banana. I think this help the blender get things going and keeps things from getting stuck.

Blend until smooth. Puree the smoothie ingredients at a high speed. Scraping the sides of the blender or pushing down frozen pieces as needed.

Everything you need to know about piña colada smoothies

What is piña colada smoothie?

A piña colada is a blended cocktail that originated in Puerto Rico. It’s traditionally made with pineapple, coconut, rum and ice. A piña colada smoothie is a non alcoholic version of the drink made a little bit healthier with added yogurt and banana.

Can you mix pineapple and milk?

You can, but I think it’s best if you use coconut milk instead. Coconut goes really well with pineapple. Regular dairy milk can curdle with pineapple and there’s even a compound in pineapple that can react with milk and cause some stomach/headache issues.

Can you use coconut milk instead of coconut cream in piña colada?

You can absolutely use coconut milk instead of cream of coconut in your pina coladas. The sugar content will be different in the regular coconut milk though, so you might find that you need to adjust other ingredients to make up for it, especially if you’re adding alcohol to your pina colada. Since this pina colada smoothie doesn’t contain alcohol, I don’t think it needs the extra sugar.
